Darka Dusty - Singer, Songwriter, Pianist, Accordionist and Producer in Portland, Oregon
"Bird on a Wire" sung by Darka Dusty, written by the late, great Leonard Cohen. I dedicate this to anyone that I've wronged, hurt or have pissed off over the years.

Here is "Summertime", performed at the Portland Expo Center Drive In Spectacular on August 13, 2015. You can hear children playing in the background... which is eerily sweet. Musical back up provided by Miri Stebivka on guitar, Bernardo Gomez on bass, Natalia Burgess on mandolin, and Lisa Marsicek on violin. I'm singing and playing piano. "Summertime" bears a striking similarity to "Oy Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon" is a Ukrainian lullaby. The title is usually translated into English as "The Dream Passes by the Windows". It is said composer George Gershwin heard it sung by the Koshetz Ukrainian National Choir at Carnegie Hall in 1929 and was deeply affected by this minor key Ukrainian lullaby. Just a few years later, he wrote Summertime in 1935 for Porgy & Bess, and the musical similarities are very clear. Here are the lyrics translated from the Ukrainian lullaby. The Dream passes by the window, And Sleep passes by the fence. The Dream asks Sleep: "Where should we rest tonight?" Where the house is warm, Where the child is small, There we will go, And rock the child to sleep. There we will sleep, and will rock the child: Sleep, sleep, my little falcon, Sleep, sleep, my little dove.

A Ukrainian-lyric version of Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight" sung by Darka Dusty, along with her former musical partner Slavko. Together, “Darka & Slavko” traveled to Europe several times, winning “Best International Band” honors at the first non-Soviet Ukrainian Pop Music Festival. In this live version of the song, they are joined by George Hrab on drums, Greg August on bass and John Stetch on piano.

A little-known carol (originally recorded by Dusty Springfield, one of my idols) that crossed my path just days after the Sandy Hook shootings. Not knowing where to place my grief, I decided to record this very melancholy lullaby-sounding carol. My partner Miri is on bass, guitar and mando and we recorded it under our band name, Mammoth in Space.
