I started playing when I was 14 years old. Music was a big thing for me from day one. I can remember my parents playing a lot of 70's era albums when I was super young. The stuff they played kind of shaped my musical tastes and the way I approach playing and songwriting. In 1986, I was at a Jewish summer camp where they gave guitar classes. I decided I had to take part in that. A few months before that, I had a science teacher who kept her guitar at her desk and allowed her students to play it and learn some stuff. From there, I just kept going and added to piano to my instrument roster when I took three semesters worth of piano classes at El Camino College in Torrance, CA where I was a student.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
The Beach Boys in 1983 at the Seattle Kingdome. I went with my familly. Their drummer, Dennis Wilson, died just a few months later.
What gear do you use?
I mostly use an Epiphone Les Paul, but sometimes I use a Fender Telecaster, or a Cordoba Classical Guitar. I also have a Casio 76 Key Workstation.
What are you looking for from Fandalism?
A chance to spread my music so that others can check it out. For those, who would like updates and gig information, they can go to my facebook fan page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mark-Goldberg/45348807658.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Elton John. The 1970-1976 era Elton. I remember having the Greatest Hits album in our house, and a lot of my neighbors having Elton albums. I'd go over to their houses and hear them on a pretty regular basis.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I have been in Shanta Louise Band, Freewheelin Bob Dylan tribute band, Doris Got Oats. I played on Jason Trachtenburg's album, "Revolutions Per Minute," as a session guitarist. Right now, I'm playing solo.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Lindsey Buckingham. Because his approach to the guitar is similar to mine. I'm a sucker for fingerpicking.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
Probably 100 or 150. I played Fashions Nightclub in Redondo Beach in 1993 with the band I was in then. I also have played shows at the Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish quite a few times to a packed house.
