Henri Grünbauer - Guitar - Second Coming (Alice Cooper cover) 1971. Second Coming is a song from the original Alice Cooper Band's album 'Love it to Death' It precedes 'Ballad of Dwight Free'. The Lyric seems to be about the Second Coming of Christ (or somebody who thinks he is Christ) an his observations of false Prophecy going on. The Video is edited in a way the instrumental parts are easy to follow in case You want to play the Guitar-part. Generally it is a one-take recording with the exception of a few additional bass notes along the bended notes in the Guitar-part. When I tried to play hem simultaneously, the extra tension caused by the bending resulted in de bass-notes dropping a quarter step in pitch, so I couldn't do that.

Borrowed Time - (Henri Grunbauer) ©2017. An all new song! You said You love me and You said don't When we are together it can be a Crime You want me to leave You but Yet I won't 'Cause we are living in Borrowed Time. It is said that I'm learning this that I am Sick What did I deserve I won't feel worth a Dime I'm sure I will overcome Yet I give up 'Cause I am living in Borrowed Time. Now when I am gone it don't matter anymore 'Cause we're living on like in a rhyme The tears we will forget and the smiles be remembered cause we're living in Borrowed time.

Talking for Days (Henri Grünbauer) ©1997 ℗2017. This lyric might need a little explanation for the younger generations. What is an 'Answering Machine'? In the '80s and early '90s Telephones were still cable-driven fixed devices in people's home. If You could afford it however, analog 'voicemail' was available via a tape operated (compact-cassette) system. These were called 'Answering Machines' If You were losing your Love and tried to get in Phone-contact, these machines with pre-recorded voice were just about as cruel all todays Voicemail!

Maybe there's a Way (Henri Grünbauer) ©1991 ℗2017. I wrote this song when I had plans to start up my band Sound Advice in the early '90s. The Bass-part was especially written for my student Lenne who appeared on the original recording. In this acoustic version the Spanish Guitar-part hints to the bass-part during the instrumental passages. The song wasn't on the repertoire for more than a few Years when it was replaced by "One of a Kind'. I picked it up for the acoustic repertoire recently.

Let's go to the Woods (Grünbauer/van Basten) ©1998 ℗2016. This song was a Sound Advice original. When Hans came up with some chords for me to play on the Guitar, I already had the lyrics. I can't remember why or when I wrote them or what they're about. Recently my Son told me about some Party he had with friends in the Woods which was so badly organised, they had forgotten they would need some light in the middle of the Night. That made me realise the lyric must be about that sort of a Party. Since We of course didn't have any cellphones back then, We would have to Party in complete darkness!

A Million Miles Away (Rory Gallagher cover) 1974. Two reasons to do this tune: I'm a Million Miles Away to most of You and I found out why I dig this tune so much. This can be found in the line "I lost my Captain and my Crew" The song is about the feelings of a Sailor who shipwrecked. This is what happened to My (German) great-great-grandfather. After his later death at sea his Diary was returned to his (dutch) Wife and sole Son, with a detailed discription what happened. Through Rory's song with its challenging Guitar playing, I got the picture of a shipwrecked Sailor complete. Romance (Niccolò Paganini 1782-1840) This piece is part of the Grande Sonata per Chitarre. In the original score there is also a accompaniment for Violin present, this is however so minimalistic that it is often left out in concert. Paganini is of course the most famous (and technically accomplished) Violinist of all time and it is only in recent times that his works for Guitar get some recognition. This recording is from 2013. I enhanced the audio a little bit. Enjoy!

Dutch Delta Blues - Henri Grünbauer ©℗2016. When I discovered the Blues, I was already about 15 Years old and spent hours listening to Mississippi John Hurt, Libba Cotton and Doc Watson. This type of Delta picking I learned to play via tune like "Deep River Blues' "Powder Rag' and 'Freight Train'. In The Netherlands we too have a Delta at the Zeeland District, very different from the Mississippi Delta, but both Delta's inspired me to write this little tune. I play it on the Eko six-string. In preparation I had to shift the Guitar's neck-angle to get a playable action. During the recording I was trying to hypnotize the Cat which was making noises to spoil the recording. That explains the mad look in my eyes from time to time.

La Connection Française - Henri Grünbauer ©℗2016. Of course I have been working on it for some two weeks, first in my head on how to connect the riffs and what sort of beat I should use. The Drums and Bass both took a session of a few hours, then I took two sessions to practice and complete the Guitar part and record it, meaning there is a studio version which I will put on soundcloud after some final mixing. But at that point I had no Video so I took the challenge to record a Guitar in one take. I is just what it is, Just Guitar, bass and drums, no rhythm Guitar, other dubbing or fancy video edits.

Kong! (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©2003 ℗2016. Kong! was composed when I played this Atari-game all the time. The first theme (which is only played once) is heard after the game starts up. It is the game where You have to climb stairs to rescue a princess. A monkey, who holds her, throws all sorts of things on your path. The music was composed for 'De Kerozinekikkers' who were working on a Jazz-repertoire at the time. Although the composition was finished and rehearsed, it was never performed live and there was never a recording other than a Notator-songfile on my Ataricomputer. It consisted of a melody, a bassline, drums and the chords, which is a rare keyboard part. The remaining notes stayed in my head for thirteen years and are finally properly recorded for the first time.

The Swinging Stranger (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©1999 ℗2016. The Swinging Stranger tells the story of a modern Troubadour who plays with local Musicians, since he came from very far it turns into a meeting of two different cultures. The local Musicians, the Drummer (who isn't visible in de Video), he Bassplayer and the Rhythm Guitarist provide a tight jazzy backing for the Stranger, who starts out with an exotic Melody. After this, the Local Guitarist plays a two voiced melody, representing a couple within the community. At one point in the melody three notes are ringing at the same time. This means a Child is born. The Stranger returns with his Melody, followed by an unisono Riff by the Stranger and the Locals. This provides a Frame for the Bass- and Drums-solo's. The Stranger dances to this, then returns to the Melody and a single string free form improvised solo follows. The Melody closes the Meeting.

On My Way - Henri M. Grünbauer ©1979 ℗2016. On My Way is a '70s Blues-Rock style Party-tune. The first demo stems from early jam-sessions that led to the formation of Saint Vitus. In 1982 it was released on their first cassette-album with an updated beat to match with Contemporary disco music. In 1984 it was rearranged to fit the set-list of Saint Vitus II and carried on to the Backfire setlist. Sound Advice picked-up the tune around 1997 with a straight 16th beat as opposed to the original 12/8 beat. This new version re-introduces the original shuffle. Guitar-wise there's some slide melody and in the intermezzo I took care to clean up the rhythm guitar to do some fingerpicking accompaniment to an artificial flageolet style played melody that will catch the attention of the women, I hope.

Purple Rain used to be the opening number in the first setlist and this particular recording was made during their very first gig. Kiss (Prince cover) - Blue Jeans & Black 1992. Blue Jeans & Black played gigs primarily as a coverband from the end of 1989 to about 1992 with the very last gig after an hiatus in 1994. In total 150 to 200 gigs might have been played. Even in matters of Life or Death, the show had to go on. This ment sometimes we played with a replacement for one of the band members, most notably two gigs with a replacement drummer and about three with a replacement guitarist (named Berto). This was a matter of Life luckily because I had my Son born. Berto played the gigs and did a fine job. Meanwhile in the jamming circuit, another Guitarplayer named Gerrit had made-up this Bluesbeat version of Prince's "Kiss" and Berto had taken this version to Blue Jeans & Black and it was still on the setlist when I returned to play the following gig. So I knew Prince's tune allright and was instructed to play it in this blues kind of version. As You will understand I had no Guitar-arrangement ready for this and made it up on the spot. That is why You might notice I don't really have the plot before the second verse. Since what happens in the first verse is sort of listenable, I hope You have fun listening to one of the sloppiest examples of Guitarplaying available on the planet. And I hope his Royal Badness will forgive me.

Desafinado (Antonio Carlos Jobim) 1962 When I had figured out how to play this great Melody, I realised the Music of Jobim is far to complex to improvise over with just some pentatonics and a diatonic scale. In fact it is quite challenging to do. I got some additional scales together to play on flat fifths/seventh and seventh/flat nine chords and arpeggio's on major seven and minor seven chords as well. For the video I digged up some pictures of me playing in a Jazzcombo.

Saint Vitus III - Please Stop (De Bye-Bos) ©1984. Saint Vitus II disbanded after only eighteen months when they lost their (female) vocalist in the fall of 1984. Just having recorded a demo and still with a fresh drummer and a keyboard player on board, their was still motivation to continue making music as a band. They recently had switched style from a Rock/Ska sound to a more Funk-oriented sound with a symphonic touch. It seemed wise to bring in René, who was locally known as a fine rock-singer and with whom We had worked before. He brought in Soprano Lucy (the woman in the video might be her some 20 years after - not sure). Her backing vocals (and occasionally lead) echoed the Saint Vitus I days since Saint Vitus II had an alto singer. Saint Vitus III recorded three original compositions (already uploaded) but also rehearsed some of the older songs, like 'Please Stop'.

Dance Medley / Let's Dance - Blue Jeans & Black (Diverse Composers/David Bowie) 1992. This is a Dance Medley We did in the late 80s and early 90s, coming from some dodgy TDK cassette-tape of a gig in Brussels. At the time David Bowie's 'Let's Dance' was a huge hit so we covered it. But not before tricking the dance floor into the Chris Montez song with the same title, finding out that 'Twist&Shout' and 'La Bamba' can be done on one and the same riff, doing some matching Chuck Berry Antics, We finally slowed down to the Famous Bowie Beat, to play the song in it's entirety.

The Shepherds / Gloria - Christmas 2015. Still early days but here are two instrumental Christmas Carols for 2015! The first is a Dutch tune about Shepherds out in the Fields when suddenly the angels appear. The melody was first published in 1852 with Joseph Alberdingk Thijm as composer. The tune might actually be much older as there goes a story that it was heard sung by poor children in the streets of (Dutch City) Utrecht. I don't think this is an international tune so I hope You enjoy! The second Carol is the traditional 'Angels we have heard on high'.

L'ombra del tuo sorriso - Johnny Mandel 1965. I week ago I did a version of this tune, but I wasn't satisfied with it. I uploaded this one for several reasons: 1.This one is harmonically better 2, It is twice as long 3. It has Piano-accompaniment 4.last but not least: The Omni inspirational musician Monica Bergo deserves a better dedication, so here it is: The Shadow of Your Smile!

A Peine - Henri M. Grünbauer ©1977 ℗2015. A Peine reflects the great effort of a young Man after his first relationship is broken up. The instrumental starts with the Melody straight away. In the repeat the melody is two voiced in harmony. This represents the memory of the good times the couple had. Then Follows the solo part on the ostinato riff, representing all the efforts he made to win her back, including a number of serenades. In the last part the melody is repeated, however he has grown since he has gone trough all these feelings and emotions and therefore the melody is played one octave up. 'A Peine' immediately follows 'Rendez Vous', Together the tunes form a Diptych.

Orfeo Negro - Luiz Bonfa 1959. The film Orfeo Negro (Black Orpheus) basically puts the Myth of Orpheus an Eurydice in Modern Times, that is Brazil at the end of the 50s. The ancient Greek myth tells us how the son of the King of Thracië or possibly Apollon himself, Orpheus brought the world around him in ecstasy with the music from his strings. Humans, Animals, Trees, Plants, he could calm down bad Weather with his instrument. Euridyce was the Woman he loved, but She died when bitten by a Snake and thus, went to the Underworld were the Dead went according to ancient Beliefs. Orpheus took his Guitar and descended to the Underworld, hereby using the spell of his Music to make Kerberos the three headed Dog let him in. Orpheus finally fronted Hades and Persephone, King and Queen of the Underworld and persuaded them to let Eurydice go with Orpheus. They agreed on the condition that Eurydice walked out behind Orpheus, who wasn't allowed to look over his shoulder to see her. First Euridyce talks to him to let him know she is following but then she wants to test his faith and stops talking. Orpheus turns his head and he looses Her. When back in the Upperworld his Heart is broken in sorrow and he only keeps playing his Guitar. This attracts the Nymphs who get very angry because Orpheus is no longer interested in Women. The Nymphs therefore kill Orpheus. They threw His Head and the Guitar in the River Hebros. It's God, Oiagros lets Orpheus Head and the Guitar strand on Lesbos where its Tongue utters its very Last musical Phrases. In the Underworld Orpheus and Eurydice are finally reunited....

Caprice №4 - Henri M. Grünbauer ©1996 ℗2015. As a warm-up and soundcheck, I played Caprice №4 prior to the Suite and the Concertino. I hadn't thought of uploading it mainly because there already is an upload of this particular Caprice. However in the original Video the righthand isn't visible and it is a special technique I use, so for that reason and because the two pieces mentioned before did quite well, I decided to turn the warm-up in a sort of encore. Hope You enjoy!

Rockin' on a Roll (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©2015. Of course I knew I wouldn't ride high on Top of the Props with an instrumental of over seven minutes long or an over eight minutes long Guitar solo on a Zappa tune. But here is a brand new instrumental tune, this time restricted to about four and a half minutes. That should do it! All Lead Guitar is done on the Melody Blue Sage with the Bill Lawrence L500 in humbucking mode and I managed to cut down a bit on distortion with an exception for the solo where the L500 is in single coil mode, wired parallel to the neck pick up, giving some bottom to the sound. With a little boost, the highs get a nasty edge. The Rhythm Guitar is done on the Epiphone Sheraton with only the bridge Humbucker on and midrange boost. The Bass Guitar is the Fretless Washburn as usual. Composing isn't something coming easy to me, it usually takes playing the Guitar a bit until some riffs come up, thinking about connections and then improvising over the riffs with a vague melody in mind. I'd love to one day make a perfect recording but this one is close enough for Rock & Roll.

Triggerin' & Riffin' (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©2015. Triggerin' & Riffin' the drums and the strings is an instrumental piece of music for Drums, Fretless Bass and several Electric Guitars. I recorded all the Guitars directly via the board in the computer, that means no mikes. For Guitarparts I used the Melody Blue Sage Nomad, an early 80's obscure Italian Telecaster based Guitar which has al lot of extra's like Comfort Contoured Body and a very nice neck. The Bridge pickup is a Lawrence L500 split coil, I use it mostly in single coil mode. This is a much better pickup than the original "Shadow'. There was no rhythm pickup. A speaker was placed underneath the strings (were on acoustics you'll find the sound hole) wired to an awful sounding preamp. The idea was quite revolutionairy and I had some fun with it in the old days, like instant feedback. However I forgot about the Guitar because there were more problems like a not really well fitting bridge. Half way the '90s I did some modding replacing the Speaker and pre-amp with an original Tele Rhythm pickup. I fixed the Bridge and constructed the Red Pickguard.

Blues (Grünbauer) 2015. Well, I wasn't born on the side of a Railroad-track nor have I ever seen the Cottonfields or the Mississippi-Delta. Double Stops (Hendrix / Berkhout /Grünbauer) 2015. Remco Hendrix : Bassguitar Edgar Berkhout : Drums Harry Grünbauer : Guitar Double Stops are two harmonic notes played at the same time, sometimes with an additional bass-note. Double Stops are usually played in thirds (major or minor). However, other combinations are possible like Fourths, Fifths, Sixths, a combination of a Seventh and a third and variations on this. Octaves, as played on the Guitar in this tune are not Double Stops. Most Double Stops come from the Bass here.

Chamber Groove (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©2015. This one comes from me jamming Rhythm Guitar on a Bass and Drums video I came across on the internet. I was planning to add some Lead Guitar as well but I found out I didn't think the bass was played well enough. That really surprised me because the drummer is quite a name. The Rhythm Guitar was recorded isolated so I build everything new around it. It became a totally different type of jam.

Caprice 20 with Stringpad accompaniment ©1998. Every now and then, when I visited my father we discussed some music and I learned a great deal of him. So I showed him the score of the 24 Caprices when I finished them in 1996. He looked through and got especially interested in the chords of nr 20. He said he would like to make a keyboard-accompaniment for it which is quite unique since never wrote anything for keyboards, only church-organ, piano, recorder and choir arrangements. He had tried out the sounds on my keyboard and was very specifically about the patch to be used with it. I was to be Stringpad. When he finished the score we played it through several times and it sounded right on his organ too. Since I only took my Guitar with me and no keyboard or recording equipment, we didn't record anything. His score is the reason I had this Caprice on the repertoire at the time along with numbers 1, 4 and 19. Fortunately, when I experimented with midi, I put the whole score in my Atari-computer, including my fathers part and luckily I had the sequencer play it to make an mp3 of it. I synchronized my recent footage to it and added some pictures of my father and me to it. I hope You enjoy!

Karagunda (trad.) / Lonesome City (J.Fox) ℗2015. Lonesome City is the song which taught me the descending chord-progression Andy talks about. I did this with my first trio 'Contemporary' in 1975, 40 years ago. I have made up some new variations and it includes a Bass-solo instead of the original drum-solo. Andy Irving is the Bassplayer who also produced the Michael Jackson type of drumvamp wich will work well in Discobars. The tune is introduced by an traditional Greek Folksong from the Black Sea district. On this melody a young man sings: "Karagunda, what happened to You? A whole summer has gone by since I heard no news from You."

Caprice №22 (Henri M Grünbauer) ©1996 ℗2015 . In some of the Caprices, things are a bit different from what I wrote down nearly 20 years ago. Usually this has to do with the structure of the piece, what parts are repeated and so on. Here in the repeat (which isn't present in the score) I skip a few bars to blend the ending with the beginning of the piece. In other words: The beast eats its own tail. We are near the end of the series of Caprices with only two left, these things happen because as scorpio you are aware of the venom in the tail. №23 won't be to much of a problem for me to play, but №24 requires a lot of barré-playing in an uncomfortable key, what I usually try to avoid. Nevertheless I am practising them both at the moment.

Caprice №21 (Henri M Grünbauer) ©1996 ℗2015. When I practiced Caprice №21, my wife asked me if I was playing music for organ. As a matter of fact I was playing music for guitar written by myself, I said. However It is obvious that my fathers influence is very present here in the 'A' part of this piece, which has the form of a trio, there are three lines sounding simultaneously. Many people, even musicians think you can not play like this on a Guitar, only on keyboard. But, we can do this of course.

Caprice №16 (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©1996℗2015. Caprice №16 is remarkable because it is played in a very odd 11/8 time signature. (basicaly three groups of three notes and one of two notes) This is something Frank Zappa experimented with when he was composing on one of the first music-computers. This Caprice is in the Key of E-flat, this isn't the most comfortable key to play on a Guitar but it has a special timbre.
