How long have you been playing?
I was 10 when I first got into Dj'ing for my folks at family functions. When I was 12, I got my first taste for crowds, I got a gig playing at my local teen centre. Since then I have played just about every major venue, in and around Toronto. When I was 13, I started playing steelpan with MAS and did that for about 9 years. And again, played just about every major indoor/outdoor venue as well as many T.V spots on talk shows and variety programs. Around the same time I was building and setting up sound systems for Atomic Sound and local dance parties. In '96, through a co-op program I met a man who introduced me to the world of Audio Engineering and I was hooked. I spent the next 10 years learning everything I could on the vast subject. I bought gear for my studio, piece by piece with the money I made from the music shop I worked in. I eventually took a course at a private audio college to get my certificate. After graduating with honours, I began teaching at said college and working as an engineer, recording bands on the weekends and after hours. I have since, started a label/artist outlet (DUB Support) and a mixing/mastering service (Romper Room Studio). I have engineered music (recorded, mixed or mastered) for such acts as: The Max Galactic, Bad News, The Heinz Pepper (Helix), Blynk, Broad Desire and DOKO just to name a few.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
My folks had been taking my brother & sisters and I to concerts and shows since we were babies. A lot of them calypso shows. The first "concert" I can remember was the Merry Men at Ontario Place. Must have been around 1985. My first BIG concert was New Kids On The Block (ew) at the Sky Dome. It was terrible. My mom decided it was a good idea to take the fam to this show for me and my twin sisters birthday. I spent the whole show in the concession with the usher. I couldn't handle the screaming girls. The shrill cries for young male loins, were blood curdling. Happy Birthday to me :[
What gear do you use?
I run a BIG BEAST Mac Pro (8-Core), Logic Studio Pro, Ableton Live, Reason, Novation controller, microKorg synth, EMU ESI32 sampler, Rat Verb reverb (realistic), Yamaha 12/4 desk, 2x technics 1200's, Korg Kaoss mixer, Gemini 676, Tannoy & Yorkville monitors, Auratone mono monitor, a Zube Tube and various MIDI devices and controllers that I enjoy tinkering with in my spare time.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
My biggest influence was my dad. He used to play Cuatro with Andre Tanker and the Tradewinds back in the day (waaaay back in the day :p). He got me into most of the music I appreciate today. My house has always been filled with music. From morning when I wake up, to when I fall asleep at night. Always surrounded by music :[
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I played steelpan for about 9 years in various bands. I played with MAS in Mississauga, Afropan in Toronto and Invaders in New York. I was also in a small short lived electronic/rock band called FSP (fuckshitpiss). We used to dress like skid rockers and practice in a buddies basement. Practice involved binge drinking, yelling at each over ideas and when out of booze we would proceed to the local watering hole for more liquids and debauchery. Like I said, "short lived" :[
