I cut the explorer to its working shape, 1/2" larger than the final one. At this point I went and weighed it and its at EIGHT pounds! So I am going to chamber it before gluing it together so a bit of a pause while I make a template to chamber with. In the mean time I went and stained the wedge of sapwood that is in the center of the guitar, and threw a wash of lacquer to take a look see. This is what I saw when I saw the piece of walnut on line.

I went to the automotive paint store and asked them for a finer polishing compound that was wax-less to bring the shine back up to a wet look. Mission accomplished. I also got the shielding taken care of, using a heavy gauge copper construction flashing and contact cement.
I should be able to get the jewelry on it today.

I got it "wired up" as a module so most of the work got done outside the guitar.
I have to get some finer polishing compound for a brighter shine, its starting to get hard to take pics of because of the reflections.
Still waiting on the headstock logo materials, should be tomorrow, If so I should be able to set this thing up and play it on Wednesday.
Its gonna look classy with its jewelry on.

All the scary work is done on the guitar. The rabbitt is cut for the back plate and all the holes are drilled for the rest.I made an 1/8" layup with mahogany veneers and a piece of the quilted maple for the back plate. It looks like Im a couple of coats away from completion, but the humidity here is causing blushing problems with the pre-cat lacquer.

In spite of the fact life has pegged the stress meter, I got this far on the guitar today.
Tomorrow I need to make a template to route the pick up locations, and then finish the square cut shape.

This afternoon I got the rough shape cut out of the back. got it routed out for the wires and got the electronics area cut out. I also got the top cap glued down. More tomorrow.

I got the bookmatched billet of spalted quilt maple yesterday.I got it planed down to thickness and squared up, Today I got the headstock machined for the tuners and I got the neck cut down and glued to the back pieces.

Here is the alt8 for the bridge and the 59/custom for the neck. The entire guitar is bookmatched material, since the original one looked good I made a jig for punching the screw holes and I made a couple of sets of bookmatched covers for the pickups.
I also made a truss rod cover mirroring the headstock out of ebony and more bookmatched veneer.

I found a number ways to NOT make volume knobs this morning. Then the neck arrived around lunch time, so I pulled the frets, enlarged the slots and installed maple strips. I drilled out the small dots and installed 1/4" gold MOP dots. I re-tapered the neck to thin it down to the size of the SG, re-contoured the back and radiused the fretboard to the 12" Gibson standard.

After talking to the nice folks at Carvin Guitars, I am going to go with one of their through body 25" scale necks, with an ebony fretboard. The only question left is how long they will take to make me one with hand selected flame maple or just have Stew Mack sen me one of the ones they have in stock. Either way I am going to cap the sides with material left over from the body top and veneer both faces with some crazy pieces left over from the pedal board.
The open face pickup covers arrived today and they will look very classy .

The wood arrived and looks better in person.Would love some input here. The question is should I put the curly (striped) part of the piece at the top or bottom? I also have access to gold trim rings instead of the cream one, thoughts?

After a lot of conversations with the incredibly nice folks at the Gibson Custom shop, I think I’m going to pull the trigger on having them make me a fretless Koa SG. The price seemed quite appropriate for the quality, all that is needed is for corporate to sign off on it.
I was going to have them make me an all maple SG, but since I love working with wood and since I found this incredible quilted maple guitar top I thought I would take a stab at building one myself.
