Retaliation Of A Black Nation

How long have you been playing?
I was born in Detroit and adopted into an Irish family in Dearborn Heights. At three years old, I took bubble baths while my older brother practiced songs like Imagine on the piano. At five years old, I accidentally played a nice melody while my cousin and I brutalized the poor piano. At seven years old, I started to remember Catholic Church hymns from mass and played them with one finger on the right hand and two fingers on the left. After feeling comfortable with songs like "I Have Loved You" and Gift of Finest Wheat I spent my pre-teen years in the realm of video game music. I began my 8-bit musical journey with games like Nintendos World Cup, and then later embraced the Street Fighter series. I made a short visit to the classical realm with great teachers like Vicky Borsodi and Sue Rosen. I played the baritone and sang in the choir during elementary school. Later, through my familys beloved piano tuner, Clara Rogers, I met Greg Edmond. Greg brought me into the world of II-V-I and jazz improvisation. During that time I enrolled into U Of Ms summer jazz improvisational program and got my first jazz band experience being trained under Mr. Duhlke. In my late teens, I took a break from all music instruction and began mastering my audio mixing and composing skills on my brand new teknics electric piano. During this time I placed high in talent shows with my original compositions. In the new millennium, loving Bob Marley, I joined my first reggae band from Detroit called One Love. I later joined Kofi Kingston and his band, Jah Kings. I sought another path I spent more time with audio mixing and began playing cocktail music for weddings, art galleries and other events. I was written about in a book for my jazz rendition of Danny Boy at Ajs Caf in Ferndale. I began writing vocal jazz compositions and practicing vocal jazz standards after having inspiration from Greg Edmond and Kevin Dewey from HFCC. At Tempermil Studios, I recorded my vocal jazz originals and got good audience feedback from my demo. In 2015, in my thirties, I joined the Gene-N-Tonics.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
My first concert was at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra....My adoptive family and I would go every year for Christmas to see the Rockettes. It was just what we did.
What gear do you use?
I have a casio cdp-130. My favorite pieces to play are probably my own.
What are you looking for from Fandalism?
I am psyched to hear new musicians from all over.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
I'd have to say video game music producers were my biggest influence. I hid away and played a lot of video games so I didn't have to deal with my buried emotions.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I've been in bands but am not in one now and are not currently doing shows.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Bob Marley...definitely.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
I performed for about three hundred people at a speech. I don't remember the most memorable...lol.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Bob Marley Legends.

Revolution starts when we acknowledge the hell we are going through and strengthen our stomachs to face the hell we need to go through to rid ourselves of tyranny. By our ancestors, we never fight alone.

Has anybody here ever fallen in love with someone bad for them? When you know it won't lead anywhere good but the feeling is so intoxicating that yo go with it anyway? Where the Moon Knows My Name is a song that mixes old world waltz with new world electronic music. This is my music about falling hard for someone not meant for you.

Constant isolation, depression about the primal wound and rarely fitting in....yes, I'm an adoptee. We should pressure these adoption agencies to pay for adoptee's therapy. They profited, now they pay.

There's nothing to fear. Your attention and fear is a food source to them. We can't control what happens to us in life but we can control how we react to it. The more you fear, the more they control. Death is an illusion. Smile!

People aren't listening to adoptees because there's an image that they're trying to protect...there's a narrative. The only way we are going to get our message out is if we are loud enough to where we can't be ignored.

Hey, this is Corey. I realize sitting here as an adoptee, I've come a long way...but I still have a long way to go. From healing my inner child, to letting my true emotions naturally flow. You know, I've never been in a real committed relationship. Not knowing myself, as a token, I just kinda fooled around. But now that I know it's ok to feel what I feel, I can finally pull my damaged self up from off the ground.
