I was just about 8 years old when I started to pick up and play the guitar. My cousin owned a 12 string acoustic guitar; I was blown away by the crystal clear sound of it. From that moment on I knew what I wanted to do.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
Jan Akkerman. Back in 1978. In Rotterdam in a club called Eksit. I went there with my friend Pete, with whom I later recorded a lot of self-written songs (sound to sound).
What gear do you use?
Diamond LP from 1975. Pearl Strat from 1977.(both for studio use only). And my main working tools "black" Betty (Squier Tele Custom, 2003) and "white" Freddy (Squier Strat, 1991). New in town is Epiphone LP Special II. Pearl Strat is my favorite. I also own a 12 string acc. guitar and a baby 6 string acc. guitar and a baby 6 string electr. guitar. My main amp is now VOXAV60. My latest guitar is a Jan Akkerman signature by Brandin !!!
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Jan Akkerman, Herman Brood and Keith Richards. Jan for his unbelievable technique, Herman Brood for his never ending inspiration and Keef for just being rock and roll.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
Hypodermic Syringe (rock and roll covers and some own songs), Starlady II (covers and more own songs), Graffiti (new wave/punk/own songs), Name It (experimental new wave/only own songs) and The IJzermangang (own songs for the Internet).
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Herman Brood, but he's no longer among the living. RESPECT! Herman was probably my biggest influence for writing (and stealing ;-) ) songs.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
The biggest audience was a couple of 1000 in Oud-Beijerland and Eibergen (open air) and the smallest gig was in Terneuzen (only us and the crew).
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Herman Brood album Street because its diversity. I heard it in 1977 and was blown right away by the first song/tone on it, called : Pop it!
