I started playing officially at nine years old (1956). I really started when I could get my mom's pots and pans out onto the kitchen floor.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
The year I started playing (nine years old), my 4th grade class went to a Seattle Symphony concert at the old Orphium Theater. The guest soloist was twelve year old Itzhak Perlman.
What gear do you use?
My main set is a 1968 set of Rogers, black, with three toms. I bought them new from Clough's Drum Shop in Seattle with the money I brought back from Viet Nam. My version of "spears into plowshares", or bayonets in to cymbol stands.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
It's a long list but my favorite drummer at the time I got my first set was Joe Morello.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
Not in a band right now. The past decade or so I've been playing for musicals in theater pits. Very fun, and if you don't like the gig, there's another one right around the corner.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
My favofite job was with the Beavers at Doc Maynards in Seattle's Pioneer Square, from 1976 to 1982.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Several Shades of Jade by Cal Tjader.
