Hold Me [MASTER] - My 2nd demo in Nashville was done in a 24 Track Studio (The Sound Lab on Grand) and came about with suddenness. The producer I wrote for had a session with the Overstreet Sisters from Florida and halfway through the session, he came out and said there would be time for one more song. Could I write something in the next 30 minutes? I said yes and wrote "Hold Me" in the writer's lounge. I had my guitar there as I waited for a ride. The Overstreets liked the song and recorded it. Shortest time between writing and recording I ever experienced. Years later I put down the vocals you hear. I lived in a room above a home studio and could tinker all night, several nights a week. The recording is from 1980. I cleaned it up as best I could. I hope you enjoy "Hold Me". jd

Texas City Texas April 16-17 1947 - I'm very proud to have written this song. The explosions in Texas City this fateful day left a mark on the city that time can not erase. I've given away copies of my CD containing Texas City, Texas April 16-17 every time someone said they were from Texas City at my gigs. The courage of the Texans who lived through this amazes me. Every time I performed this the audience got very quiet. Please listen to my words. I did my best to portray what happened. jd7 -

The cover tunes went too and pictures of my mom and kids that could not be replaced. I just got back 185 recordings. My hard decision was which ones to post first.

Goodbye My Lady 1980 - Goodbye My Lady was my first fully demoed song, written in 1980.I n a bad decision the producer had the song done in "A" because it was good for the pickers. I wrote it in C#. Hmmm, I needed a vocal step-ladder to maintain my melody. I added this lead vocal in 1999 and it was as close I was going to get. The master was on a metal cassette. The years have changed the recordings sound. To me, it sounds like someone else singing in parts. It's a shame. The piano work is excellent. Congas can barely be heard. Still love the song about a lucky man and his waitress lady who danced around tables. Be safe my friends.

Lover's Lament [Master] - In 2002, I went to the Rosenberg Library in Galveston to research several song ideas. Lover's Lament is a composite of several ladies who flourished during Galveston's wide open period and ended up wealthy wives, and the powerful men whose friends included Sinatra, Howard Hughes, Bob Hope, Peggy Lee, and so many more. The Margarita was invented in Galveston in 1948 for Peggy Lee. In my song the missed woman rose to fame in the Silk Stockings District (Red Light) in Galveston and then married well, leaving our narrator forlorn and lonely. The 1st version was 11 minutes long and I had to do a bit of editing. The 1st frame picture is from 1980 when I was 4 years old. : )

Only One Heaven - A picture of a silent piano alone would not convey the humanity I wanted to project. The feather of life at the center represents our universe. Not my universe. We are all in this together. The song's lyrics state my feelings about religion. I do not choose the way anyone else worships, nor should they have any say on how I believe. One religion condemning other religions for not believing as they do is wrong. Accumulated wealth hoarded in the name of the father, the son, and the holy ghost is not what Jesus taught. That wealth could feed the hungry worldwide and cure cancer. How many have died in the name of religion? There was no way I could include everyone I have loved as a friend nor do I list lovers. Quality above quantity, I dare say. I don't lie to myself and say I hate ex-girlfriends and ex-wives because I loved them deeply at one time. My life choices were not always good choices. There was something wonderful when two people fall in love but forever may only last a few months? Quoting this song, "Only one heaven that's all God made. Only one heaven, you don't have to be afraid. Lay down your burden. Bet your soul because it's true. Only one heaven and there's room there for you." I was never satisfied with my previous video which contained a variety of religious pictures representing different cultures and religions, so 4 years ago, I deleted it. I chose all of the photographs I wanted for a new video, but one, years ago and kept looking. At a very creative writer/poet's site where I was reading and saw some interesting pictures. Miracle of miracles there in my eyes was "The" picture I had been searching for. I realized I was about to make Only One Heaven into JD's Heaven, so I used the one picture all the way through the video to signify heaven by any other name is still personally spiritual to the Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Jew, and most other religions, excluding animal and human sacrifice and children's participation in sex acts. The lady who posted "The" photograph was clear evidence that intelligence, humanity, and beauty can coexist. Thank you, Teodora, for letting me use "The" picture.

I Still Believe In Love - https://youtu.be/ghbnBveKaA0 - When the object of your affection doesn't know how much you care. Maybe you should let them know? Then there are times when love has come and gone and the only solace is the proverbial looking back. That's when dreaming is better than reality. Take Me For A Ride On A Star - Co-written with Jean Roberson. She gave me the title and a few hours later I had written a Lennonesque flavored love song. Kim Morrison did a beautiful vocal arrangement that captured the Disney theme song. 12 years later I added another guitar to the bridge and did as good of a male voice rendition to her vocal arrangement. The musical arrangement was by Kim and her friends who recorded at the Sound Lab on Grand in Nashville. The recording shows it's age (1980). The track mix was on a metal cassette. All the vocals are me/jd

This Is No Virgin Heart (2002) - The original version of my song was very Allman Brothers influenced and this video was originally used for it. I had done 4 other videos for the Doug Burtchaell produced version in which he plays all instruments and yesterday discovered that this video fit the 2002 version with all its Woodstock pictures, some of Santana. The Santana influence can be heard in Doug's lead.

I've only been able to play my beautiful wooden lady 3 weeks since doing a lot of hand therapy on my finally usable right hand. Yesterday was the longest I have played in one sitting in 8 1/2 years - 2 1/2 hours. The right hand was fine but the fingers on my left hand have no callouses on the tips, yet. They will be arriving gradually over the next few weeks. This is definitely a country. I need a charting artist to record it. : ) me/jd

False Prophet Blues (Master) - Written in a frisky Dylan mood. A tongue in cheek commentary song about a drunk who found himself on the roof of a bar. The passers-by, below, thought he was a jumper and called the cops. He was a drinker who had no intention of jumping. The bass part about wore out my fingers. The tongue in cheek line about watching the radio made me laugh as I wrote it. Inspired by a news flash about a man on a roof in Houston.

To Make You Feel My Love [COVER] Featuring Jimmy Quango on Guitar - My vocal on th Bob Dylan crafted masterpiece with Jimmy Quango creating a mesmerizing guitar arrangment played so beautifully by the maestro. I heard his arrangement on YouTube and asked for permission to record a vocal. I made several attmpts but wasn't satisfied. I recorded again this morning and did a better job, I hope. I just sent this to two lady friends. One said it was one of the sexiest vocals she had ever heard and the other said, "Damn". I am 73 years young/old and I am still blushing. Please enjoy, as much as I have enjoyed singing to this wonderful track. I edited it, by having a full verse instrumental intro to hyponotize the listener and make them enjoy my vocal more. : ) me/jd

Wishin' On A Lone Star - This retrospective glance at my life was inspired by a certain day during my 18th year. Lord, I'm 73. Seems like several lifetimes ago. I went to South Park High School and we were the refinery brats because most of our dads, and some moms, worked in the area refineries. Beaumont High students were affluent. This was in the days before integration when Hebert and Charlton-Pollard always had the best football teams. This one day we invaded their turf by going to the bluff over-looking the Neches River by the Beaumont Country Club. We saw a ball of water moccasins and decided not to swim. College and 11th St had a traffic circle and some of the youth would try and see how many times they could go around it or make"The Drag" up and down 11th. The south side of Beaumont was aromatically challenged by the line of refineries and chemical plants on the east side of Pt Arthur Rd. When the wing was wrong, you got a dose of foul smells. Several days the hose off ladies partially dissolved at Lamar Tech (Then, now University). The campus iss on the west side of Pt Arthur Rd. Some of the memories triggered a smile as I wrote this song. Some, not so much. Aren't we all, in Texas, wishin' on a lone star.

Momma I'm Coming Home - Today on the anniversary of my mom's death, I choose to celebrate her life. She never raised her voice to me, no even when I deserved a good scolding. The only time she ever showed anger was when her 18-year-old son was being a smart ass and said goodbye to his female parent. She threw her houseshoe in my general direction. We both shared a long laugh. I said, "Great arm, mom.". She was always in my corner without fail. We talked on the phone a lot but not enough when her son, the songwriter was in Nashville. The day my daughter and sister called me at home (I had been working with the night auditor at the hotel the night before and I was asleep), then at work. When I got to work I was told to call my daughter. I was stunned! My boss, and good friend immediately paid for my airfare to and back from, Beaumont. A decision that will haunt me the rest of my life had occurred the night before. I had an important meeting about signing a publishing deal on Friday. I had the impulse to call my mom but put it off till the Friday meeting so I could call her and tell her first, We had talked for over an hour the previous Sunday. Friday I was in Beaumont. The remorse about not calling remains with me. I was finally able to write, "Say Goodbye" 17 years later from the emotions. Trying to work up enough emotional control to sing it in front of people. I had to turn it into a lost love song and not mention my mom by name, to even record. The recording is subject to a few emotional vocal cracks and pauses out of necessity. I have a new used "Blueburst" Ibanez guitar and I was bursting with joy when I could play her song this year. I love you mom. You have always been my guardian angel.

Footprints In The Sand [MASTER] - Finally able to remove ceiling fan noise with new audio cleaning software. Written and recorded immediately after getting some feeling back in my right hand. after my 2nd 4 disc fusion surgery. I knew I had made a mistake marrying my mentally ill but in denial wife in April 2008. She told me if I ever left she would kill herself and had attempted suicide by ODing on meth before I met her. I could not make the trip back to the Upper Texas Coast until early November and which time I risk a bus trip from Dallas to Houston and made it. The song clearly tells what I feeel in my heart. I have not missed her and to me that is sad. She is telling everyone I abandoned her but that is untrue. I told her I was moving out October 2018 and obtained a letter from my doctor removing me from the lease in early March 2019. I turned down moving to Hawaii to stay with my daughter and family to stay and hustle up rent and electric bill help from March 2019 till November 4th 2020. My wife couldn't be counted on to help pursue that. I was bed-ridden and in a wheelchair the last 6 years. Everyone I called asked why my wife wasn't calling once they found out she was unemployed. She was unemployed for a 6 1/2 year period and I suggested she show working for me as an office manager to cover up that gap on her resume. The night before I left I had to stay and be with her son who has Asperger's Syndrome and emotionally shut down when I tried to tell him bye. His mother didn't get home till 3am after her "Date" with her drug dealer with whom she had been having an affair for months. I left the next day. Away from her toxic world, I have peace of heart and mind. Of all my songs (2400 so far) this captures my broken heart at the time better than any other. It is very hard for me to listen to. My words cut through my soul. No fool like an old fool I say.

Marine Sulphur Queen - An historically accurate original about the disappearance of a T-2 tanker with a load of sulphur in route from Beaumont, TX to Norfolk, VA. Many claim it was swallowed up by the Bermuda Triangle. The Marine Sulphur Queen had a history of fires and debris was found west of the tip of Florida. Cuban fishermen reported an unusual smell. I remember the news bulletin when the Marine Sulphur Queen was reported missing in my mid-teens. After I completed my research and the song was written and recorded, I contacted the owner of the best site online about the Marine Sulphur Queen. She was the daughter of one of the crewmen who perished on the ship. I emailed her a copy. I wanted her approval before posting the video. She approved and we made plans for her to come to Galveston and pick up her CD. She lived in New Orleans. She passed away a short time after we talked. A friend of hers contacted me and told me she had died.

Watchin'' Heather Dance [Re-mastered] - Written immediately after watching the Hungry Like The Wolf ... video by Duran Duran. I wanted to write something with that much energy. The only song I ever played drums on. All the guitars and vocals are me. The lyric is inspired by my observations at 12 at the 1st dance I went to. All the girl were on one side of the room and the boys on the other. I danced twice with a broom. Very shy at that age. I got over it. Every time I try and write a description after having to take a nerve pain pill for my neck and lower back typos reign supreme.

Marina del Rey [COVER - LIVE VOCAL] - I was going through archived videos and found Marina del Rey. The vocal was recorded with a ultra-cheap ceramic microphone and distorted in places. I just spent 6 hours getting it this clean. I'll re-record it Thursday night but in the meantime here is the only George Strait song I performed on stage with my wooden lady. Probably over 300 times in 10 years in and around Galveston dinging 6-7 nights a week.

Seashores of Old Mexico [COVER - LIVE VOCAL] - My vocal on my favorite George Strait classic written by Merle Haggard. I learned this beautiful country song in an unusual way. I learned it but hesitated singing it in front of a LIVE audience. My bud, Dennis Compton, began playing the Strait version before gigs - hint hint nudge nudge. I finally did it.

False Prophet Blues [LIVE]- Tongue in cheek lyrics written sitting on the steps of the Seawall in Galveston. I recalled a flippant comment I made to a friend the night before and "Sit and watch the radio." made it into the 2nd draft.

Loving You Loving Me [LIVE] - - An original inspired by my ex-wives. I may not want to admit it but after forever's come and gone and love departed, I still care deep down inside. I can't 100% unlove someone. I can despise dishonesty, infidelity, and treachery but once that bonding of hearts occurs there is no 100% cure.

What's A Little Rain [LIVE] - Written in 1978 before I moved to Nashville. Love trapped in an analogy comparing a little rain to the flood of emotions generated by a broken heart.

The Seeker [NEW] - This original was written immediately after a 2pm - 6pm gig on the Strand in Galveston in 2001 as it was raining cats and dogs. I sat in my car with my guitar in my lap and wrote a commentary song in about an hour. Had fun demoing it later that night and adding harmony vocals for flavor. I had a TENS Unit attached to my neck to ease off on a bit of pain.

Our American Heritage [LIVE] - I am so tired of seeing western movies where the basic cowboy and Indian confrontation plays out with the same ending. There were many battles won by the native tribes. How can we forget "Custer's Last Stand" which was total annihilation and brilliant cavalry strategy by Crazy Horse and blundering dividing of forces by Custer? The whites were always portrayed as heroic and honorable. They frequently raided villages when the warriors were elusively evading capture and only women, children, and old men were there. The tribesmen were defending their homes and land from invaders. The pretense of giving blankets for protection from the winter cold when they were infected with alien diseases that swept through the tribes (men, women, and children), much like our present-day pandemic, was deliberate. Being banished to reservations and treated as lower class humans, offered little or no opportunity. How did Columbus discover anything? He was lost, the lands he claimed to discover were very occupied. Euro-man systematicly looted every country ans enslaved the people. I wrote this to express my feelings about genocide on par with the Holocaust.
