J.D. Richards - Songwriter - I Still Love You - I was playing my wooden lady and singing at a piano bar called "Thlrsties" just off Phelan Boulevard in Beaumont, Texas. This happened 39 years ago. l had written a new song and this was the 1st night I would sing it. I was in town to see my daughter and mom. As I sang I noticed a man wearing a cowboy hat sitting quietly alone at his table. When I finished, he arose and walked up to me and said, "Could you Plat song again?".e ten placed a $20 bill on my music stand. I played it for him. He tapped his hat and as he headed by me toward the door, he turned and said, "You nailed it, my friend." I found this recording on a 39-year-old cassette and it had hiss, pops, volume drops, and distortion. I worked on the edit for two weeks then paired it with the slideshow I had made for an acoustic version of the song.

The Storm - When I read about the 1900 Storm being the worst natural disaster in us history, I began to research the hurricane's deadly path across Cuba, it's left turn across the Gulf of Mexico with Galveston, Texas in its sights, and the devastation (The US weather forecaster's predicted it striking Florida. Only thr Cuban forecaster's got it right and they were ignored by the USA). A photographer for Edison had his newly invented camera and took pictures of the island after the storm (Between 6 and 12 thousand dead). The story of the orphanage and the fate of the nuns and orphans was heart-breaking. To ensure that they would all stay together, the nuns, each tied up to a dozen orphans to them with catastrophic results. The surge of the Gulf drowned them all. When one body was found by searchers there was the gruesome task of following the rope. All rights to the pictures are maintained by the Rosenberg Library for the citizenry of Galveston. The song was written in late summer 2000 in tribute to those who perished. September 8. 2000 was the 100th anniversary of the deadly storm. There was no Seawall then. I fractured a bone in my right hand and could not play my song, two months in the making. I found the original recording with wave sound effects [along with the wind] after 20 years and wanted to post it for my friends. Please listen and hear about the disaster that very nearly wiped Galveston off the face of the earth. It didn't because of the true grit of the Coastal Texans who rebuild after each time "The Gulf" rises up.

Our American Heritage - I lost the lyric over the years and could only remember bits and pieces. I re-wrote the verses and recorded it. I am very pro-Native American/American Indian. When we played Cowboys and Indians when I was young, I was always an Indian. My mom's mom was full blood and her dad half-breed. Taken along with my father's Cajun/Heinz 57 bloodline, I am quite the blended human. I believe I fell instantly in love with my wife because she looks like an Indian Princess. This a re-posting using the original audio from the LIVE performance and taking out the tribal drums I added in the Chorus in the re-mastering.

Poe's Nevermore [Hallelujah] - Inspired by Mr Poe, "March For Life", and my grandson, Trevor. This original was written as I watched the young start to lead the rest of us. The mass killing at Parkland showed once again the urgent need for gun control reform. Still, nothing has been done. God help us all.

Profiled - Profiled JD Richards The flames of freedom should burn for everyone. The pale race has taken everything they see. There's a new world order. We will see equality! Put an end to the madness - We are the same, you and me Round up all the monsters who leave black men hanging from a tree. Bridge: We have to fight the devil or we will find there's hell to pay He needs to be led away in shackles and locked away. Locked away. Prosecute the demon politicians who get wealthy from bribery. We the people need to protect our freedoms. Nothing about freedom is really free Together our voices will be heard. They try to steal our votes and betray democracy The anti-Christ surrounded by evil souls. A Fascist in the house of white is not how it should be. Bridge: We have to fight the devil or we will find there's hell to pay He needs to be led away in shackles and locked away. Locked away. No more stealing from poor countries. Everything of value. Such insanity. No slavery. No people going hungry. No killing for religion or erasing a society. Stop raping the planet in the name of progress. Global warming by degree Men and women respected - Equal pay - The way it should be. Bridge: We have to fight the devil or we will find there's hell to pay He needs to be led away in shackles and locked away. Locked away. Make this our day of reckoning. Embrace our humanity. We’ll get back to the Garden of Eden and see to shining sea. The flames of freedom should burn for everyone. Quit thinking selfishly We’ve got a chance to make things right. Copyright 2020 JD Richards BMI The vocal was recorded LIVE with my webcam microphone. I'll need to re-record it with my stage mic and windscreen later. I couldn't wait to post it. God Help Us All - The ominous bell conjures up thoughts of the grip the pandemic has on the world. Especially in the United States where it was politicized and poorly handled. In 1990 I started writing this for a CD project. My words can easily be applied to today. It is inspired by the Beatles [John mainly]. I found this demo on a cassette. I cleaned it up as best I could. I hope you enjoy it. The day after I recorded it I lost feeling in my left hand for 8 years. God Help Us All - JD Richards There are no easy answers to the questions in my heart No, life’s not easy. At best it’s bitter-sweet Chorus: Standin’ on a ledge lookin’ out at forever Ready to jump but afraid to take the fall I know I’d better pray for my salvation God help us all There’s no one to show you through the valley of the shadow It’s a hard road to travel when you walk alone Chorus: Standin’ on a ledge lookin’ out at forever Ready to jump but afraid to take the fall I know I’d better pray for my salvation God help us all Instrumental Break: Where’s this place called heaven and how do I get in ( I know ) There’s no place I can hide the things I’ve done Chorus: Standin’ on a ledge lookin’ out at forever Ready to jump but afraid to take the fall I know I’d better pray for my salvation God help us all Tag: God help us all God help us all © 1998 Wathesgro Music BMI

Lover's Lament - I have written 2,500 plus songs in my life. All demoed. Hurricane Ike destroyed my good friends, Chaplin Dave and his bride, Michelle's, beach house. Leveled everything down to the concrete slab. My recordings and 3 boxes of song contracts were swept out into West Galveston Bay. I lost 2,100 demos. I have since recovered 400 from my stage songbooks. This song was inspired by "The Silk Stocking District' in Galveston. I found it two days ago unlabeled. One less Ike swept away. The blue house I lived in was 2 blocks away from the boundary. The chorus starts, "Silk stockings - stiletto heels. A room with no windows filled with thrills. I wrote it right after reading a book about Sinatra and his pals performing then partying during Galveston's heyday. There's a line in the song about partying with Frank. Creative license suspended.

I have Hold Me sounding like 1980 when I wrote it during the Overstreet Sister's recording session The producer came out in the lounge area and told me they would have time to record 1 more at the end of the 3 hour session Did I think I could write a love ballad I grinned and said, "Yes, I can." 30 minutes later they started working on it. As I wrote it I heard Crystal Gayle's voice. The arrangement and piano magic by Rick Durrett. Dedicated to my wife.

Hawaiian Holiday - Over 35 years ago I carried my guitar to the top of Diamondhead in Hawaii to serena... read morede the wind. I took pictures of Honolulu that looked like postcards. Rather than take the long and winding trail down the inside of the crater, I made the decision to go down the outside, not realizing there would be drops of 10-20 feet with nothing to grab. I grabbed my guitar in my right hand and started down. I burned both back pockets off my jeans. Lucky I put my wallet in my front pocket. I was slip/sliding away for about a hundred feet and I decided back my way over and take that long and winding trail down. 35 years later my daughter and grandson took pictures standing where I stood. They took the trail down.

My Heart Knows No Peace - The malevolent specter of alcoholism is represented by the hooded figure in the first frame of my slideshow video. The figure has no race. It has no gender. Alcoholism is an equal opportunity addiction. The isolation seems to be a long term deadly dance. This original addresses the effect both have on women and men, young and old. It is my observation that drinking alone at home or drinking in a crowd have similar results. Group drinking makes it easier to self medicate.

The Gulf Is Crying - On April 20, 2010 the "Deep Horizon" oil spill disaster began devastating the Gulf Of Mexico. The Louisiana/Mississippi Gulf Coast was changed for decades to come, if not forever. The Gulf is indeed still crying. The lives of those who earned their livelihood from the Gulf were changed overnight. BP did not include the spillage in their year-end report and patted themselves on the back for a profitable year. They cut corners for more profit and it cost so many.

Beach Thunder - Written on the Seawall in Galveston when a line of thunderstorms drove me into my car till they passed. There were no Heinekens quenching my thirst that day at 1pm. Just a creative license mentioning my favorite beer. Synthesizer is not usually a musical instrument I utilize. This original was fun to record. Galveston Rocks! My favorite Heineken story involves "The look" the bartender/friend would give me to see if I needed a beer. I would play 4 to 6 hours and rarely took a break. My friends were in awe of my bladder control. The only breaks I took were emergency bathroom breaks. 1st one 2-3 hours into the gig. Mark would bring me 6-8 Heinies a night from which I would get one or two big sips from each bottle. I sang in the hottest part of the open-air Palapa bar where no breeze dared to blow. I wore a tank top and shorts and sweated profusely 10 months of the year and froze my ____ January and February. Mark and I worked out a way to get through the last hour. He would bring me a shot of peppermint snapse and my voice would return as though by alcohol miracle. I loved singing on Galveston Island. Be it a restaurant/bar, wedding reception/wedding, or private party. I played a retirement dinner for several judges for an outrageous fee. People actually paid me to do what I would have done for free. Nobody tell on me, please. Admittedl3, at 72 with loss of feeling in both hands, there is not much of a demand. :) ALL TRADEMARKS AND COPYRIGHTS REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THEIR OWNERS. Little Goddess - I went to an AOL get together with my friend, Mike, and I was introduced to a young lady who captivated me from word one. My buddy was sweet on her so I had to be strictly hands-off. We slow danced a few times and she gave me her number and I called her several times then had to just walk away. The attraction was mutual. I wrote this for Christi a few years later after moving to Nashville to write songs for my supper. Five feet tall and weighed 95 pounds. Now that is a little goddess.

Last Cowboy In Town - Written when I was writing for Tuneupon Music in Nashville in 1980. This is the demo I did immediately after finishing the song. I added the full step higher modulation before the last verse later and performed my song several thousand times from 1999 to 2008. There or 1 or 2 lines that I go slightly off pitch. Had a recording with the modulation that was swept out to West Bay in Galveston when Hurricane Ike destroyed my friends, Chaplin Dave and Michelle's beach house and storage unit. They lost everything and I lost thousands of pictures, over 1,000 song demos, two boxes of song contracts, dishes, and keepsakes.

Great mix by the Fuzz-man on the tracks. The vocals were added 22 years later in Galveston. It turned into an intense up tempo scorcher. I had a little falsetto fun at the end a la Beatles influence. I finished the lyric and started recording the lead vocal then worked on the Beatlesque backgrounds. it was a fun song to build a new vocal structure to. The bands I fronted out of Beaumont, Texas in the late 1960s did a lot of Beatles, Animals, Elvis, Hendrix, and Yardbirds. We were in Destin,FLA and she was walking at the edge of the surf wearing blue jeans, a pleasent (word choice deliberate) blouse, and a straw hat. The pictures all include my baby girl whose all grown up, married, and living I Hawaii and my super duper grandson lives there too. It's a rough job but someone had to live there in Pradise. I'm glad it's Mandy and the Jackson family plus Mr Tee Benson. I wrote "I Live In A Blue House" to think her in song for having to rejuvenate my heart and soul when I arrived in Galveston. Watchin' Heather Dance - I wrote this immediately after watching the video of Duran Duran's "Hungry Like A Wolf". I didn't copy anything directly but wanted to create something with that type power. This is probably the best rhythm guitar I ever played LIVE. No punch ins. Who would think that this was written by a 57 year old acoustic guitarist/vocalist who believes till this very day that the most honest genre of music is someone with a guitar, or piano, alone facing an audience. I walked away from independent recording deals and chose, what for me, was the ultimate musical path. The feedback and instant gratification of singing to new and old friends can not be matched. I owe my peace of mind and heart in regards to my music to places like the Captain's Table, the Baja Beach Club (My first Galveston weekly gig in January 1999, the Jamaica Beach Saturday Gigs, Bahama Mama's, Daddy's in Gilchrist, and so many others (Over 3000 gigs in 9 1/2 years - Yes, I was quite busy. The idea came from a conversation with a friend whose boyfriend skipped out after cleaning out their bank account. She was down on herself. I said "If you could see you through my eyes?". She was a beautiful woman of 24. I wrote the line down on the back of a business card.

Love Could Find Me Yet - It was indeed my pleasure to watch a true professional work. During 3 three hour sessions, Kathy Mattea sang beautifully on 9 of my songs. McCartney slipped in my head as I wrote this one with a little touch of Gilbert O'Sullivan. I forgot to list Scarlet Johansson as one of my favorite actresses. All of the pictures in this video are of the future Mrs Jost. All rights for the pictures used remain with the owners.

My Addiction - This one of my favorite originals. Inspired by and dedicated to my wife. She drives me crazy at times but I'm crazy about her. I can't picture me without her. She is the reason I am trying so hard to get out of my wheelchair. I love you, Valerie.

Lady Come Home - I love beach country. Wish I'd never left. Galveston is my adopted hometown. Haven't been there since April 2008. I can still close my eyes and hear the waves. This original is a direct plea to continue the evening in private. Written and recorded in 1981 when I was 6 years old. :)

The Eyes Have It - Written about a pair of beautiful eyes. My daughter's friend, Michelle, has the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen that weren't my daughters, at the time. In October 2oo7 just a picture of the future Mrs. Richards [Valerie] triggered love at 1st sight, and 2nd, and 3rd. 1st kiss February 8th 2008. Married March 22nd, 2008 on the beach in Galveston. I was 60. How does a poor, old songwriter marry a woman with the face of a movie star? This original is dedicated to my wife and daughter. When Mandy was 2 years old I wrote "Mandy With The Laughing Eyes" based on the wonderful routine we went through each night at bedtime. :) I have written 62 songs inspired by Val (12-15 recorded with her home and in the next room as I wrote and recorded them). I have recorded only half of them due to a minor problem (LOL - 2 surgical procedures fusing 4 cervical discs helped for right hand but left hand hasn't had full feeling return completely). So frustrating not being able to play a song without making numerous mistakes after living my life with a guitar in my hands. There were nights I made no mistakes during a 4-6 hour gig at the Captain's Table in Galveston. I shouldn't complain. I'm 72 and I still have my memories.

Nothing At All [Cover] - My vocal on the Keith Whitley masterpiece. Dedicated to my wife. The sweetest lips I'll ever kiss. Eyes from heaven with tenderness. More woman than I'd care to miss. Pictures of Milana Vayntrub make up the video, Lilly in the AT&T commercials. She is an actress and comedian. I have no wind screen so when I swallow in the quieter part of the sing it sounds so loud. My apologies.

I Still Care - Kim Morrison produced a beautiful arrangement of I Still Care and all three of my copies were on CD and washed into West Galveston Bay courtesy of Hurricane Ike. Had some of her friends who were great pickers play on it. A dobro, push fiddle, etc. I loved it. Years later I recorded vocals with the tracks. It's a guy looking back and remembering the love of his life.

Mardi Gras Boogie #9 - I was inspired by Prince's Super Bowl halftime show when I wrote this. Particularly the lead. I was privileged to sing in six Galveston Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday Parades. Sang this song in 5 of the parades.. One year as I held my microphone and was singing this very song, a beautiful lady threw rather large beads to me and hit me in the side of the head.

Amy's Got It Goin' On - Written after watching My Immortal by Evanescence on TV in 2005. I needed a name for the song I was writing and Amy fit the melody line perfectly. The background vocals were fun to do. I had just played a gig in a palapa bar and my vocal cords were chilled.

Odyssey {Final Edit} - Originally a writing exercise that turned out well enough to keep. : ) Odyssey JD Richards Walkin' on the beach just before daylight Your shadow walks beside me as my heart dies of fright It was yesterday or was it the door before I never missed anybody so much of that I'm really sure You were my everything. The light before my eyes. I play it over a thousand times. Hopin' my memory lies. I keep forgettin' every thing I did wrong I know in this wide world, baby. I know where I belong. How'd I end up here at the edge of doubt and fear. Oh, it's so sad to me. That is very clear. I'm not a diplomat. Just a fool on the beach. I swear I had everything just within my reach Yeah Oh, yeah Why, baby, why? A cold October day just at the end of night. Oh, this is something wrong. It didn't turn out right. The glitters gone from the crown. No sparkle in the sky As one by one the stars go out right before my eyes Love is ever after. It's a memory of sorts. Our time together didn't last so long. It was much to short. Memories are angels fallen from the sky Just a chance and nothing else. We live and then goodbye! God Looks Like Willie Nelson {Final Edit} - I wrote this sitting at the coffee table watching a Willie impersonator leaning against a fence in a CMT video in 2002. It is my ode to the King of Texas songwriters. The man whose move back to Texas from Nashville led the Austin emergence as an alternative to the formula songs coming out of Tennessee at the time. Such a remarkable. creative genius. He wrote Patsy Cline hits, Roy Orbison, etc while still in Nashville. He is very much still alive and creating. He counts presidents, young country stars, and Snoop Dog as friends. A truly amazing man. I've learned a lot from Willie. Visualizing Willie at the Pearlie gates with a peace pipe of cannabis is isn't hard to picture. I am in no hurry to see him start his NEW job. : )

Sweet Surrender {Final Edit} - Sweet surrender - When you find that special someone and envision a life together there are no guarantees. I chose Gable and Lombard for the picture slide show that is the video for my song because they found each other and their happily ever after ended when she perished in a plane crash in 1942. She had been traveling by train across the US selling war bonds. She didn't want to wait on the train so she chose to fly home to her husband.

It's Really Love {Final Edit} - An original written while I spent 2 months writing in Panama City Beach, Fla. Written as a laid back, medium tempo ballad. By the graces of Doug Luther's high energy guitar work. Great mix by the Fuzz-man on the tracks. The vocals were added 22 years later in Galveston. It turned into an intense up tempo scorcher. I had a little falsetto fun at the end a la Beatles influence. It's hard to believe it was 40 years ago today.

Don't Call Me No Refugee (Update) - The week after Katrina devastated New Orleans, a tall man in a camouflage jacket with a Saints ball cap came into the bar in Galveston where I was playing. We talked and he told me about the network news people calling US citizens in New Orleans refugees. The on air broadcasters were quickly corrected by the production staff. The vet was incensed. He had been in Desert Storm. He was now basically homeless. How can you be a refugee in your own country? The country you fought for?

Summer Wind - The video is a man reliving his life while heavily medicated and hospitalized. Sounds biographical. The equalizer when all has been done and said is death. It knows no color, does not consider wealth (Admittedly money gets you the best medical care), and treats all religions the same. Much as Coronavirus takes more lives of people of color who don't have access to even minimal medical care. How many have died from this modern day plague undiagnosed? Is there a system in place for coroners to test the undiagnosed? From what I have seen, no, there is not. Without this information, the figures posted by news media and government officials are not accurate. Once again the poor, uninsured mortality rate shows what money and positions of power can buy - Life to a degree.

On The Island [Master Edit] - All the photographs used in the video are by popular Galveston photographer, Marian States. Thank you Marian. This is original love song inspired by Galveston Island. I have never experienced the warmth and friendship everywhere I turned like I did for that 10 year period of my life when I lived in Galveston. I got offered singing gigs with bands and indie recording deals but performed solo with just my guitars by choice. Having friends come back year after year and watching their kids grow up before my eyes was a beautiful experience. I had steady year round gigs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and booked myself the other days, or should I say nights, as much as I wanted? The biggest plus was my daughter could come and see daddy and my sons were my roadies for two separate months and they got to see what daddy could do. After 8 years with little feeling in my left arm, they were surprised, I think. : )

The Highway That I'm On [Final Edit] - Dr Klutz here! I had 2 videos and I deleted the wrong one. The one with approaching 1000 views on youtube and thousands elsewhere. Indeed, Highway 87 runs through my life from junior high to Spring 2008. When the winds and storm tides of Hurricane Ike roared across Bolivar Peninsula in September 2008 it devastated the lives of the Coastal Texans living there. I graduated from South Park High School. The real one in Beaumont, Texas. Not the fictional one in Colorado. A lot of Beaumonters retired to the Crystal Beach/Bolivar/ Gilchrist area. God bless you my friends

Courage [Master Edit] - In April 2010 the survivors of the Parkland, Florida mass shooting showed the world what courage is by spearheading a movement for gun control against NRA resistance and in the face of selfish opposition from the good old boy network. My grandson, Trevor Benson, spoke before thousands at the March For Our Lives demonstration in Honolulu. The courage shown by the youth of America inspired me to write this song.
