This Is No Virgin Heart - This is the first single off my NEW CD, "72". Fitting since I'm 72. All instrumentation by Doug Burtchaell. When your heart's been broken a time, or two, and you look around the room and there's never anyone but you. It makes you jaded. The negative clouds your view. Love can leave you alone in the dark when all they left you was a broken heart.

That's My Baby - This song was inspired by ex-wife #2 right after we got married. We were in Destin,FLA and she was walking at the edge of the surf wearing blue jeans, a pleasent (word choice deliberate) blouse, and a straw hat. All the instrumentation and the arrangement are by Doug Burtchaell of Houston, TX. I wrote it and all the vocals are by me. Now, to my choice of words and the dedication. The pictures all include my baby girl whose all grown up, married, and living I Hawaii and my super duper grandson lives there too. It's a rough job but someone had to live there in Pradise. I'm glad it's Mandy and the Jackson family plus Mr Tee Benson. I wrote "I Live In A Blue House" to think her in song for having to rejuvenate my heart and soul when I arrived in Galveston. Every time I hear me sing "That's My Baby", know that I'm thinking about my perfect for me daughter and going fishing with her and watching her face light up when she caught another big one.

Ruby's Dream - Written for and dedicated to Rev Gerry Westebuhr and his lovely wife, Ruby. I included the Lubbock and Texas Tech lines for 2 Texas Tech fans who came to hear me sing every week in Galveston. My favorite lady movie stars are Charlize Theron and Halle Berry. I needed a redhead for the 1st frame of Ruby's Dream video. I was extremely happy to find a picture of Charlize Theron as a redhead. I used all pictures of the incredibly talented beauty.

She Said "Yes" This was written to play at weddings other than my own and I ended up playing it at one wedding reception for good friends. I didn't expect to ever get married again. I found someone special and things moved rapidly. We kissed for the 1st time on February 8th, 2008. We were married on the beach in Galveston across the Seawall from Gaido's and Casey's (Her son is named Casey). I didn't ask her to marry me because she beat me to the punch by texting me in the middle of a gig on Monday. I had planned on getting down on my good knee Saturday and asking her. She lived just north of Dallas. I was able to get Rev Gerry Westerbuhr, my good friend and spiritual advisor, on the phone Saturday morning 03/22/2008 and he agreed to marry us that afternoon at 6pm wherever on Galveston Island we picked. Valerie and her daughter, Adrianne, drove down Friday for us to get married Saturday. I had been booked to sing Saturday but the booking was canceled Friday morning as I was crossing the causeway Bridge driving from Dallas. Things worked out. I was driving down for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday bookings through April as I transitioned to living in Metro Dallas. I never got with a booking agent in Northeast Texas and the feeling in my left hand worsened making performing no longer an option. Please excuse the string squeaks from my guitar and strength in my left hand.

Down In Miami - The original title was Down In Havana. Doug Burtchaell of Houston, Texas did the arrangement and played all the instruments. I watched in awe as the song took shape. Do yourself a favor and listen to all of Doug's guitar mastery. Most of the lead was created on the fly. I told him I wanted a 2 minute conga at the end so he switched to conga mode and wow did he deliver. What he did in his home studio rivals the best work of Carlos Santana. Thank you Doug.

Morning Comes On Angel Wings - Written before I saw my bride on Myspace in October 2007. We met half way between Galveston and Dallas (Aptly named Centerville, Texas). She asked me to marry her 4 days before I planned to ask her to marry me. We saw each other that 1st time February 8, 2008 and were married on the beach across from Casey's in Galveston on March 22, 2008 at 6pm. Her daughter, Adrianne, was there and her son's name is Casey. The imagined lady when I wrote the song was her. I'm sure of it. The 2nd frame of this video is the picture of Valerie I saw that 1st time. She looked like an actress from the Golden Era of Hollywood and a bit like Madelaine Stowe. I used pictures from that Golden Era and the two I mentioned of Valerie in the video. : )

Watchin' Heather Dance - I wrote this immediately after watching the video of Duran Duran's "Hungry Like A Wolf". I didn't copy anything directly but wanted to create something with that type power. This is probably the best rhythm guitar I ever played LIVE. No punch ins. Who would think that this was written by a 57 year old acoustic guitarist/vocalist who believes till this very day that the most honest genre of music is someone with a guitar, or piano, alone facing an audience. I walked away from independent recording deals and chose, what for me, was the ultimate musical path. The feedback and instant gratification of singing to new and old friends can not be matched. I owe my peace of mind and heart in regards to my music to places like the Captain's Table, the Baja Beach Club (My first Galveston weekly gig in January 1999, the Jamaica Beach Saturday Gigs, Bahama Mama's, Daddy's in Gilchrist, and so many others (Over 3000 gigs in 9 1/2 years - Yes, I was quite busy. During season I would book two gigs a day several days a week. At the 'Table I saw my friends kids grow from early elementary school to junior high.)

If You Could See You Through My Eyes - Written for the lady I love. In my eyes she is never less than breathtakingly beautiful. The idea came from a conversation with a friend whose boyfriend skipped out after cleaning out their bank account. She was down on herself. I said "If you could see you through my eyes?". She was a beautiful woman of 24. I wrote the line down on the back of a business card.

The Eyes Have It - Written about a pair of beautiful eyes. My daughter's friend, Michelle, has the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen that weren't my daughters, at the time. In October 2oo7 just a picture of the future Mrs. Richards [Valerie] triggered love at 1st sight, and 2nd, and 3rd. 1st kiss February 8th 2008. Married March 22nd, 2008 on the beach in Galveston. I was 60. How does a poor, old songwriter marry a woman with the face of a movie star? This original is dedicated to my wife and daughter. When Mandy was 2 years old I wrote "Mandy With The Laughing Eyes" based on the wonderful routine we went through each night at bedtime. :) I have written 62 songs inspired by Val (12-15 recorded with her home and in the next room as I wrote and recorded them). I have recorded only half of them due to a minor problem (LOL - 2 surgical procedures fusing 4 cervical discs helped for right hand but left hand hasn't had full feeling return completely). So frustrating not being able to play a song without making numerous mistakes after living my life with a guitar in my hands. There were nights I made no mistakes during a 4-6 hour gig at the Captain's Table in Galveston. I shouldn't complain. I'm 72 and I still have my memories.

Odyssey {Final Edit} - Originally a writing exercise that turned out well enough to keep. : ) Odyssey JD Richards Walkin' on the beach just before daylight Your shadow walks beside me as my heart dies of fright It was yesterday or was it the door before I never missed anybody so much of that I'm really sure You were my everything. The light before my eyes. I play it over a thousand times. Hopin' my memory lies. I keep forgettin' every thing I did wrong I know in this wide world, baby. I know where I belong. How'd I end up here at the edge of doubt and fear. Oh, it's so sad to me. That is very clear. I'm not a diplomat. Just a fool on the beach. I swear I had everything just within my reach Yeah Oh, yeah Why, baby, why? A cold October day just at the end of night. Oh, this is something wrong. It didn't turn out right. The glitters gone from the crown. No sparkle in the sky As one by one the stars go out right before my eyes Love is ever after. It's a memory of sorts. Our time together didn't last so long. It was much to short. Memories are angels fallen from the sky Just a chance and nothing else. We live and then goodbye! God Looks Like Willie Nelson {Final Edit} - I wrote this sitting at the coffee table watching a Willie impersonator leaning against a fence in a CMT video in 2002. It is my ode to the King of Texas songwriters. The man whose move back to Texas from Nashville led the Austin emergence as an alternative to the formula songs coming out of Tennessee at the time. Such a remarkable. creative genius. He wrote Patsy Cline hits, Roy Orbison, etc while still in Nashville. He is very much still alive and creating. He counts presidents, young country stars, and Snoop Dog as friends. A truly amazing man. I've learned a lot from Willie. Visualizing Willie at the Pearlie gates with a peace pipe of cannabis is isn't hard to picture. I am in no hurry to see him start his NEW job. : )

It's Really Love {Final Edit} - An original written while I spent 2 months writing in Panama City Beach, Fla. Written as a laid back, medium tempo ballad. By the graces of Doug Luther's high energy guitar work. Great mix by the Fuzz-man on the tracks. The vocals were added 22 years later in Galveston. It turned into an intense up tempo scorcher. Don't Call Me No Refugee (Update) - The week after Katrina devastated New Orleans, a tall man in a camouflage jacket with a Saints ball cap came into the bar in Galveston where I was playing. We talked and he told me about the network news people calling US citizens in New Orleans refugees. The on air broadcasters were quickly corrected by the production staff. The vet was incensed. Summer Wind - The video is a man reliving his life while heavily medicated and hospitalized. Sounds biographical. The equalizer when all has been done and said is death. It knows no color, does not consider wealth (Admittedly money gets you the best medical care), and treats all religions the same. Much as Coronavirus takes more lives of people of color who don't have access to even minimal medical care. How many have died from this modern day plague undiagnosed? Is there a system in place for coroners to test the undiagnosed? From what I have seen, no, there is not. Without this information, the figures posted by news media and government officials are not accurate. Once again the poor, uninsured mortality rate shows what money and positions of power can buy - Life to a degree.

Lover's Lament - I have written 2,500 plus songs in my life. All recorded except the 68 written since March 20th, 2018 that I haven't recorded yet. I did record 38 others written in that time period. Hurricane Ike destroyed my good friends, Chaplin Dave and his bride, Michelle's beach house and leveled everything down to the concrete slab. My recordings and 3 boxes of song contracts were wept out into West Galveston Bay. I lost demos for 2,200 songs. I have since recovered 400 from my stage songbooks. This song was inspired by "The Silk Stocking District' in Galveston. I found it two days ago unlabeled. One less Ike swept away.

On The Island [Master Edit] - All the photographs used in the video are by popular Galveston photographer, Marian States. Thank you Marian. This is original love song inspired by Galveston Island. I have never experienced the warmth and friendship everywhere I turned like I did for that 10 year period of my life when I lived in Galveston. I got offered singing gigs with bands and indie recording deals but performed solo with just my guitars by choice. Having friends come back year after year and watching their kids grow up before my eyes was a beautiful experience. I had steady year round gigs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and booked myself the other days, or should I say nights, as much as I wanted? The biggest plus was my daughter could come and see daddy and my sons were my roadies for two separate months and they got to see what daddy could do. After 8 years with little feeling in my left arm, they were surprised, I think. : )

I Still Love You - In the 1980s at "Thirsty's" in Beaumont, TX I experienced one of the most moving reactions to any of my songs in a given night. A gentleman in a cowboy had wiped his eyes as I played "I Still Love You" then slowly got up and I thought was moving toward the door to leave but he came and laid a $20 bill over my music stand and asked me to play the song again. I did immediately then he got up and tipped his hat and left. Today I played the song all the way through 1st try. Been having trouble with varying degrees of feeling in my right hand. Say Goodbye [Master Edit] - Inspired by the emotions I dealt with when my wonderful mom died. It took 15 years to be able to write it and I have never performed it. The lyric was written from the point of view of a romantic relationship that had ended. My relationship with my mom will never end as long as I draw a breath. She is my guardian angel as she was in life. I love you mom.

Peppermint Cowboy [Master Edit] - Dedicated to Trevor Benson, my grandson. They should do a prequel to Urban Cowboy and let Trevor play the lead role. They could call it "Urbane Cowboy".He could do his own stunts. I am amazed at his balance and coordination. That's Trevor on the mechanical bull as a youthful cowboy and reading his book. Tee, you rock.

Why Hurry When It Feels So Good [Master Edit] - Written as a tribute to Dean Martin. The King of Laid Back. I wrote "You'll Make Someone Else A Hell Of Wife with his voice in my head but he was very married at the time and although he liked the song, he could not record it. This tune was written in 1981 as a fun song to perform with hints of the Dino like voice.

God Looks Like Willie Nelson - I wrote this sitting at the coffee table watching a Willie impersonator leaning against a fence in a CMT video in 2002. : ) Reference video track: ALL TRADEMARKS AND COPYRIGHTS REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THEIR OWNERS. Shaman's Song [Master Edit] - A song about a Native American on Friday night who accidentally wanders out on a roof in downtown Galveston. A crowd gathers thinking he was going to jump. The long arm of the law reaches out and takes him away. Based on a true story. I was taught in school about Columbus discovering America and that was a lie. There was a native population that lived in harmony with Nature. Reference video track: ALL TRADEMARKS AND COPYRIGHTS REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THEIR OWNERS. Faith Hope [No Charity] - Written in 1990 shortly before I lost feeling in my left arm for 8 years. I had fun with the my Daion dual pickup. Sounded like a Les Paul and looked like a Gibson double cut-away. My favorite electric I've owned. Burgundy lady. I should have kept the vocal clean with just a touch of reverb. Faith In Hope ( No Charity ) J. D. Richards Hope left Texas – Had a damn good reason An honest woman couldn’t earn no wage She wasn’t one for the unemployment So she left Texas for F L A. (She) Rode a Greyhound into Pensacola That bus took her down the coast highway Looked for a way to earn a dollar But she woudn’t ride a desk all day Bridge: She ended up workin’ as a dancer and feelin’ so out of place The men she met she couldn’t take home to momma They wanted more that she was givin’ so she made her escape She was livin’ a hard luck story Her luck was runnin’ at an all time low When I first saw her she was readin’ her bible In an all night diner I found Hope She came home with me as the sun was risin’ She made it clear it was just to sleep I offered money to tide her over But Hope took no charity Bridge: She ended up workin’ as a dancer and feelin’ so out of place The men she met she couldn’t take home to momma They wanted more that she was givin’ so she made her escape Hope left Texas – Had a damn good reason An honest woman couldn’t earn no wage Last time I saw her she looked like an angel I have faith that hope will find her way Copyright JD Richards 2000
