An Interview With Trombonist Jens Wendelboe by Joey Flores | June 1, 2010 | Artist and Show Reviews Today we are happy to interview jazz trombonist and composer Jens Wendelboe. When hes not jetting off to play at the Nobel Prize ceremony in Oslo, tour with Blood, Sweat, and Tears, or serve as musical director for pop diva Donna Summers, Wendelboe devotes himself to composing and arranging for the jazz orchestra hes fronted since he first moved to New York from his native Norway to study composition at the Manhattan School of Music in 1984. Wendelboes latest release Inspirations features his original compositions and arrangements, performed by the Big Crazy Energy New York Band, a 16-piece band consisting of some of New Yorks top jazz musicians. Inspirations is on sale on CDBaby.com and I urge every jazz fan to check it out. Writing, producing, marketing, and above all financing a jazz big band is not an easy task. Jens has been doing this for a long time, so we thought wed ask him about his experience. earbits: You composed, arranged and produced your latest release. Can you talk a little about the process? What were some of the challenges about it? Jens Wendelboe: The challenges are always of more practical characters, such as financing, coordination of people, finding time to do the project and creating the right work environment for everyone by making sure that scores and parts are impeccably printed out taped together with the right page turns and so on. The composing and orchestrating is just fun stuff to deal with. earbits: As a Norway Native, do you find much difference between the jazz scene and market in the States vs. the one in Europe? Jens Wendelboe: Yes!!! earbits: You have been very active as a sideman musician. Do you find that working on other projects helps you in promoting your own music? Jens Wendelboe: I always find that if you always are honest and try to do the best job that you possible can do, no matter who you work with, your name little by little gets associated with quality work which never hurts in the field of promoting your compositions, arrangements and CDs. earbits: Is there anything else youd want to share with the earbits audience? Jens Wendelboe: I would love to use the opportunity to mention that the next CD with Big Crazy Energy New York Band vol.2 is already recorded and is in the process of being mixed. Its expected to be released in the spring of 2011. I cant wait to share this new CD with you all, it is truly a labor of love. The Big Crazy Energy New York Band and I, look forward to the possibility of participating in University clinics, festivals, and other positive musical experiences where we all can create a magical musical moment or two together. Thank you Jens for taking the time to interview with us. We wish you the best of luck with your latest release, Inspiration.
