My dad bought me my first guitar, a small scale acoustic Hofner with a sunburst finish when I was 5 years old. I started taking lessons when I was 7. That said, I didn't experience playing with people until I was 12. So, let's say it's been 40 years ... not very long.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
I recall seeing Julian Bream, classical guitarist and lutenist at Massey Hall when I was 9 years old. He was very engaging and obviously very versatile. I started digging into my lessons and practicing with more enthusiasm after that show.
What gear do you use?
I am a Fender player primarily on the electric side. I have always carried Strats with me, the oldest being a 1974 hard tail. Of the others I play the most, there is a Martin OM35 acoustic, Johnson slide resonator, Gibson Skylark lap steel (a new project), and recently a Godin acousticaster. I have owned Gibson and Ibanez guitars in the past. If money was aplenty, I would own a lot more.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
I was a young lad during Beatlemania, old enough to see their American debut on the Ed Sullivan show. My parents frequently reminded me of how excited I looked. The Stones also had my attention. My dad was good at pointing me in the direction of what influenced the Beatles and Stones, turning me on to Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles to name a few. I loved going to the record store with my dad, who was most generous when it came to purchasing vinyl.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I currently do quite a bit of work with Elana Harte - great indie artist, song writer, singer, guitar player. Elana covers a wide range of styles and works with many artists. When we play, in addition to her original material, we cover a good number of artists showing our rock (electric and acoustic) influences.
I have also been playing with Code Green for the last 6+ years. - we cover classic rock, blues and do originals. These guys are me mates, and to last that long as a band, there definitely is a positive chemistry.
As far as shows go, I would say on average these days, I am doing about 100 a year. This does have to balance with my day job gig.
