How long have you been playing?
I did my first public performance when I was five. My dad was the resident pianist on a radio talent contest called HAVE A SHOT, and during the commercial break one night they got me up to sing a little song to the studio audience. Fortunately for the world it didn't go to air! When I was seven I remember sitting in the corner one night at Mascot recording studio in Auckland while my dad played piano on a session with the guitarist, Peter Posa.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
Redwood Park Festival, West Auckland, 1970. It was NZ's first rock festival.
When we were kids there were lots of jazz gigs that my dad was playing t that we'd hang out at, things like the Tauranga Jazz Festival etc. I wasn't really interested in music then but some of it must have rubbed off.
When we were kids there were lots of jazz gigs that my dad was playing t that we'd hang out at, things like the Tauranga Jazz Festival etc. I wasn't really interested in music then but some of it must have rubbed off.
What gear do you use?
Gibson J45 acoustic guitar, Rowan Lute (instrument specially built for me by Alan Muggeridge), Hofner Congress 1958 arch-top electric guitar, Kala baritone Ukulele, Hohner harmonicas, Shure SM58 & 57 mics, Yorkville PA speakers with Yamaha mixer, Fishman acoustic soloist amp, Fender Blues Junior valve combo
What are you looking for from Fandalism?
It's always nice to be in touch and I really appreciate the chance to share a bit of the stuff I've been doing and to see some of what the rest of you are up to as well.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Probably Led Zeppelin, though Cream, Hendrix, The Beatles, Johnny Winter, Bob Dylan, John McLauchlin, Rory Gallagher, Larry Norman, Phi8l Keaggy and many others are right up there too.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I've been in a number of bands over the years (Bus, Fair Question, Little Wing et al), mostly 3 or 4 piece blues-rock outfits, & I'm currently working as a duo with my wife Brenda Liddiard, who plays mandolin, guitar and vocals.
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Any of you. I find that all jams are good in their way - whether someone is better or not as good as you are, the challenge to make the session sound and feel good is always fun and worth attempting.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
I've played to 10,000 in a stadium & 2 in a lounge. Of course there are also TV audiences & I have no idea how big they've been.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Maybe the Beatles' White Album. It's a double so I'd get more listening time out of it too. :-)

Pania - Auckland Street Choir (a song by Mark Laurent)
Some of you know I've been involved with Auckland Street Choir for a few years. We had our 6th birthday party the other night (though I've only been part of things about half that long) and we were jamming on whatever anyone wanted to sing. Someone asked for my song Pania, and Sandra Eriksen videoed it. It's an honour for me that these guys choose to sing this song - one that several members particularly relate to. They bring added wairua to it.

My Friends Are Dying - Mark Laurent.
In 1986 I did an album called Kindness In A Strong City. I was "on a mission from God". :-) Sometimes you don't know when you hit your peak until long after you've passed it. After 35 years this is still the album that has the longest tail - the one people talk & write to me about all the time, and I'm really grateful that they do. Technically it wasn't my best album, but it mattered. A lot of my friends from the 90s onwards won't have even heard the songs off Kindness, as, being very Jesus-centric, they're not the usual fair for pubs or folk clubs. I was around & close to a lot of young people who got too deeply into drugs in the early 70s - I wrote this for them, and a few get mentioned in the lyrics. The title, My Friends Are Dying, comes from a Ray Comfort book of the same name.

This seems an appropriate song to be posting at Easter. It's from one my second album, Kindness In A Strong City, released in 1986. I haven't played this in years, & my voice has lost some of the idealism & sweetness of the original, but gained some pathos & gravitas maybe.

Take Me To Your Leader - Mark Laurent.
Before I started performing & songwriting in the 'mainstream' from the early 1990s, I'd already had a decade where nearly all the songs I played & wrote were as part of the Jesus movement - I was a kind of evangelist with a guitar, traveling around the country, mostly singing in churches & 'outreach' events, trying to use the music to share my faith. Of course I still do a bit of this, & my core beliefs haven't changed, but doors open & close over time.
Take Me To Your Leader is a track that appeared on my first album, which came out (on vinyl) in 1982. When we went in to book the studio (Mandrill) and told the guys we were wanting to record a 'gospel' album the first question was "How big is the choir?" I think they were a bit surprised when we turned up with guitars, amps and a drum kit worthy of John Bonham. :-) This was one of the two acoustic solo tracks I did on that set. I hadn't played this at all in decades but a few months ago I brought it out in a busking situation & it seemed to go well.

Rosie - Mark Laurent. There was a nightclub in Auckland in the 1980s called Mainstreet. Around the corner on the brick side-wall of the building was a piece of graffiti - "ROSIE DON'T YOU ACT SO WILLING". My imagination got to work & this song came out of it. I'd always imagined a video clip of a rainy night on the street with shadowy figures slinking along the footpath & taxis dragging slowly up the wet street. In the meantime here's a demo.

Man Of Peace (Psalm 120) - Mark Laurent.
I put this psalm to music back in 2003 at the time of the second Gulf war. It seems the sabre-rattling is going on again, this time with Iran as the target. Iraq turned out to be needless aggression built on a fabric of lies. Iran may well be the same thing. The iraqi war was fostered by a Christian president - if Iran is attacked we'll have a repeat performance. What does any of this have to do with the prince of peace or his children?
I'm sorry that I've felt the need to sing this song again, but 'the times they are not a'changing' - yet.
