It is now estimated that approximately 50 ... read moreAsiatic Cheetahs are living in the wild in Iran. But the numbers appear to be rising again. There is an old Iranian saying which goes "Khastan Tavanestan Ast" -- it means "Where there's a will there's a way". This is the simple slogan behind the two Asiatic Cheetah Public Service Announcements (PSA) which UNDP together with Iran's Department of Environment (DoE) produced to urge the citizens of the world -- and especially the citizens of Iran -- to unite to protect this endangered species. Recognizing the problem, and in a move designed to save these emblematic cats, a solution to the problem started over a decade ago. That was when the Government of Iran -- together with UNDP and a number of concerned national and international NGOs -- started the Conservation of the Asiatic Cheetah (CACP) project. The year was 2001. It is now estimated that approximately 50 Asiatic Cheetahs are living in the wild in Iran. But the numbers appear to be rising again as a result of the establishment of protected areas and the vigilance of game guards who try to protect the animals from poachers.

The commemoration ceremony of Paco De Lucia, the renowned flamenco guitarist was held in Tehran on 7 March 2014 in Tehran’s Eyvan Shams Hall. Organized by Zemestan Cultural Forum and Farid Hamedi, the ceremony attracted a great number of the elite, artists, and musicians such as Prof. Simon Ayvazian; Hamid Dibazar, composer and university professor and flamenco guitarists. Moreover, members of foreign missions based in Tehran such as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Deputy Head of the Spanish Mission in Tehran were also present in this event. Pieces of flamenco and fusion music were played to pay tribute to Paco De Lucia. Pablo Gan, deputy head of mission from Spanish Embassy started the ceremony with his opening remarks. He appreciated the organizers, in particular the Art and Cultural Organization of Tehran Municipality, for holding this commemoration. He highlighted more than five decades of Paco’s artistic endeavors in the world, and said, “Years are needed so that someone could possibly reach at Paco’s level in playing the flamenco guitar.’ He continued, ‘Above all, Paco left a legacy in the world of flamenco, which has two aspects: firstly, being known as a key flamenco figure, and secondly, bringing about developments in flamenco along with his counterparts.’ Deputy Ambassador Gan further said that Paco De Lucia developed the flamenco environment in a way that it evolved from the gypsies’ world to become a global music. He underlined that Paco felt the urge that flamenco should be combined with the modern world music.’ In the end, he expressed delight that he could join the interested audience in Tehran in the commemoration ceremony of Paco De Lucia. The next speaker was the Iranian musician, guitarists and university professor, Dr. Simon Ayvazian who has been awarded as an outstanding figure and the Father of Guitar in Iran. He started his speech with a brief introduction of himself and his role during more than five decades in spreading the flamenco guitar in Iran. He regretted the loss of Paco and considered him the myth of the century. Highlighting Paco’s role in modernizing the flamenco and combining it with other genres in music, he underlined Paco’s role in familiarizing the world with Flamenco. In the end, professor Ayvazian advised the young flamenco guitarists to try and definitely travel to Spain, the homeland of flamenco, because flamenco is nothing that could be acquired solely through listening; it is a culture and must be experienced. The next keynote speaker was composer and university professor, Hamidreza Dibazar who introduced Paco in the artists’ own words. He called Paco a phenomenon and highlighted his endeavors in globalizing the flamenco music as a genius. Dibazar valued the late Paco’s hard work in spreading the flamenco culture beyond the borders of his homeland, and said, ‘Both in his life and death, Paco was able to bring people together.’ Recalling that, in spite of the traditional music genre he belonged in, Paco was familiar with modern musicians such as Stravinsky, he said, ‘One of the key points in Paco’s music was that although he was capable in achieving very high speeds, at the same he enjoyed the silence and pauses and found them attractive. This university professor dedicated one of his works, called Foojan [meaning crying out] from his latest album, Boom, to the memory of the late artist, Paco De Lucia. While the track was being played, a video art made by the Farid Hamedi for this work was being shown. Dibazar hoped that artists, musicians and figures would be celebrated—rather than commemorated—when they are alive and among those who love them dearly. A number of outstanding Iranian flamenco guitarists and musicians dedicated the performance or tracks of their works to the renowned Paco De Lucia, including: Mehrdad Pakbaz, Ehsan Faramarzipour, Pezhman Nour Band, Mohammad Moazzen Band, Faraz Nassiri and Amirhossein Hamidi. Farid Hamedi (Rohina) closed the ceremony by announcing that, in the memory of the late worldly known flamenco guitarist and with the support of the Zemestan Cultural Forum and the Art and Cultural Organization of Tehran Municipality, Eyvan Shams Hall will dedicate one of its credible halls once a month to flamenco events and research for free. This was broadly welcome by the audience. The Spanish flamenco guitarist, Paco de Lucia passed away on 26 February in Mexico at 66. He was playing with his grandchildren on the beach near his home when he passed away.
