Here's one of my fave Chuck Berry songs, one that shows the country side of rock'n'roll. This is from the Zoo Jam Session. Dave, Dennis, Dan and Darren play You Never Can Tell. (This particular grouping has never played together before this session. I think the rhythm section picked it up pretty well.)

The Undisputed Truth performed "Papa was a Rolling Stone" before the Temptations did. DFAWR performs it here. Dennis Fox on vocals and '59 Jazzmaster, Neko on drums, Fraser Ross on '68 Fender Jazz bass, and yours truly playing a Fender Aerodyne Strat through a Quilter Aviator 8 amp. Unfortunately there's a bit of distortion at times on the bass guitar due to signal overload in the camera, but not too much.

Trouble with the bass (Ska Ska Ska) is an original ska jam from a recent gig with Dennis Fox and Whoever Rocks. (In this case I was one of the "Whoever") This particular night was a loosey goosey jam-based night which was reasonably successful in the artistic sense, but not so much commercially ~ 4 people in the audience, although they stayed till the end, and danced quite a bit. For more great tunes go to Dennis Fox's Fandalism page http://fandalism.com/forfoxsake/ I appear on some of his posts, but there are also great numbers featuring Sam Hurrie, Ron Campbell, and others.

Let the Good Times Roll (Nogoodniks & Ne'er-do-wells cover) Nogoodniks & Ne'er-do-wells perform the Louis Jordan classic "Let the Good Times Roll". According to Wiki, "the song was written by Sam Theard, a New Orleans-born blues singer and songwriter, and was co-credited to Fleecie Moore, Jordan's wife, who never wrote a lyric in her life (however, her name was sometimes substituted for Jordan's to get around an inconvenient publishing contract; this strategy backfired when Louis and Fleecie divorced acrimoniously and she kept ownership of the songs he'd put her name on -- thus denying him any income from them). Nogoodniks & Ne'er-do-wells is Dennis Fox, vocals & bass guitar, Paul Murphy, drums, Erik Eriksson, keys & bg vox, David Spragge, guitar & bg vox, Howie Brown, saxophone (alto here) and special guest Ray Gonzales, tenor saxophone. Black Magic Woman cover by NME. Here's the New Mother Earth performing "Black Magic Woman", a song that most people associate with Santana. However, it was written by Peter Green, and first recorded by Fleetwood Mac. Our version is a mash-up of the two versions. The maestro conducting is Paul Murphy, who also sings and plays congas. On guitars are Dave Spragge and Teva Mcgillis, on keys is Erik Eriksson, on bass is Cal Juraschka, and on drums Mike Berman. Unfortunately Teva's wireless gave out in the middle of his solo. LEANNE ~ Covered by the Old Guys on the Rock. The first annual Texada Blues and Roots Festival featured a jam at the Texada Island Inn, to which all the featured performers were invited. Here I am with some of my oldest friends and one who's a bit of a newbie in our hood. The fresh face of the bunch is Mike Berman on drums. On bass guitar is my brother from another mother, Doug Saunders. The keyboard player is my old friend Ron Campbell, and the slide player is my mentor, the great Sam Hurrie. The song, Leanne, was written by Omar K Dykes, and it's dedicated to my wife Leanne. Sorry for the camera angle; it's the only place I could find to set it up. I need to find someone who will run the camera for me and actually focus on different people from time to time. Oh well, at least you can see me. LOL

High on a mountain top, written by the great Marty Stuart. I haven't filmed anything lately, so I thought I'd post an oldie. This is from a dance we played at back in 1995. I've got a bit of a rock tone for such a country song, but oh well. Garnet Avery, vocals and mandolin, Dennis Fox, bass guitar and vocals, Paul Murphy, drums and yours truly "Teflon Dave" (before I got my coating) on balls out guitar.

Jamming with Bella Bean. Here's something in a totally different style. Our wee dog Bella is either a singer or a music critic. Don't judge my playing; I was only farting around to get Bella to sing. Miss Bella Bean is a Poodle/Bichon/Border Terrier/Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua/Pomeranian, which gives her voice that special timbre.

So a couple of weeks ago we went into the studio to record some rough demo tracks for a cd to give club owners in hopes of getting a gig or two. Here I am at my ripe old age and this is only my third time in the studio. We're live off the floor, except my vocals were overdubbed. The mix could be better; I think the keyboards are a bit loud, but nonetheless, here's the New Mother Earth version of the Omar and the Howlers song "Hard Times in the Land of Plenty". NME is Dave Spragge, Guitar and Vocals, Teva Mcgillis, Guitar. Cal Juraschka, bass guitar, Erik Eriksson, Keyboards and vocals, Mike Berman, drums, and Paul Murphy, percussion and vocals. Peace out.

In this video the bass player is Darryl Milne (Funky Brother D), and the drummer is Pete Howey (Boomer).

This is from the early 90s, I would guess. This group will likely be getting back together at a "Jamapalooaza" soon; I will try to post something from that.

Here's another take on Young Jessie's "Mary Lou", performed here by the New Mother Earth (Lite). Paul Murphy, vocals and percussion/ Teva Mcgillis, guitar/ Erik Eriksson, keyboards and Dave Spragge, guitar. This is the stripped-down, no frills NME band playing on a Sunday afternoon on the patio at the Royal Coachman Neighbourhood Pub in Campbell River. I dig the way Teva is kind of hidden behind a bush, like Bigfoot. Pardon the possible overindulgence in guitar solos; Paul likes to hear me ramble on.
